Vetmedin Oral Solution

VETMEDIN Solution (pimobendan oral solution) is the only oral solution approved by the FDA to delay the onset of congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs with Stage B2 preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), and management of the signs of mild, moderate, or severe CHF in dogs due to clinical MMVD or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).^2,3,5 Given every 12 hours, its unique dual mode of action reduces the preload and afterload on the heart while improving contractility of the heart muscle.¹ Pimobendan, the active ingredient in VETMEDIN, reduces stress on the heart and increases cardiac output without raising oxygen or energy consumption. Increasing age is a risk factor for heart disease and heart failure.⁴ When used as directed, VETMEDIN is demonstrated to deliver delayed symptoms with preclinical disease, and improved quality of life and survival for dogs in heart failure.^2,3,5 Ask your veterinarian if VETMEDIN is right for your dog.

VETMEDIN (pimobendan) Chewable Tablets and VETMEDIN Solution (pimobendan oral solution) are for use only in dogs with Stage B2 preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) or congestive heart failure (CHF) due to clinical MMVD or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The most common side effects reported in field studies were poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, dyspnea, azotemia, weakness, and ataxia. VETMEDIN should not be given in case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or any other clinical condition where an augmentation of cardiac output is inappropriate for functional or anatomical reasons. VETMEDIN Solution is flavorless.

Vetmedin Oral Solution contains 1.5 mg of pimobendan per mL of oral solution and is available in 50 mL bottles. Each bottle includes an in-use cap and a calibrated dosing syringe.

Please ensure the selected product and quantity are appropriate for your pet, as recommended by your veterinarian. For current availability, please refer to the product selection above.

Vetmedin Oral Solution should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

Administer this medication at the same times each day and the same manner (e.g., with or without food) for each dose.

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give more medication than prescribed or two doses at once. If you have questions about your pet’s prescribed dosing schedule (e.g., timing, interval), please contact your veterinarian.

VETMEDIN Solution (pimobendan oral solution) should be administered directly in the mouth (orally) at a total daily dose of 0.23 mg/lb (0.5 mg/kg) body weight. Do not mix into food. The total daily dose should be divided into 2 equal portions administered approximately 12 hours apart (ie., morning and evening). The syringe is calibrated to deliver the appropriate morning or evening dose when drawn to the dog's nearest weight in pounds, each dose should be rounded up to the nearest 1 lb. increment. Do NOT shake the bottle before or after to avoid foaming.

Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled temperature at or below 77°F with excursions permitted up to 86°F. Once the bottle is opened, use the contents within 8 weeks.

Keep this and all other medications in a secure location out of the reach of children and animals. Exposure to extreme temperatures, light, or moisture can affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications. Always store this medication properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places), as outlined on the product label.

The most common side effects of this medication are poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, shortness of breath, weakness, and ataxia (lack of muscle control and coordination).

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences a seizure, difficulty breathing, fainting, collapse, or abnormal fluid retention (particularly in the belly area).

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all other medications out of reach of children and animals. Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans.

Wash hands after use. This product may cause eye irritation. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, flush affected eye(s) immediately and thoroughly with water. If wearing contact lenses, flush the eyes first with water and then remove the lens(es) and continue to flush thoroughly with water. If eye irritation continues, seek medical advice and provide this product information to the physician.

Do not administer VETMEDIN Solution to dogs with Stage A or B1 preclinical MMVD due to the risk of cardiac pathology associated with exaggerated hemodynamic responses to VETMEDIN Solution.

The safety of VETMEDIN Solution has not been established in dogs with asymptomatic heart disease or in heart failure caused by etiologies other than MMVD or DCM. The safe use of VETMEDIN has not been evaluated in dogs younger than 6 months of age, dogs with congenital heart defects, dogs with diabetes mellitus or other serious metabolic diseases, or in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian prior to use if your pet falls into one of these categories.

Do not administer this medication to animals with a known or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.

If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

While there are no specific food or drug interactions reported for this product, potential interactions may still be possible. The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, sotalol), calcium channel blockers (e.g., amlodipine, diltiazem), and sildenafil.

*NOTE: This may not be a comprehensive list. Please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns prior to use. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when multiple medications and/or supplements are given together.

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
