Trifexis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime) for dogs

Trifexis prevents heartworm disease. Trifexis kills fleas and prevents flea infestations, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections in dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older and 5 pounds or more.

The use of ivermectin at higher than FDA-approved doses at the same time as Trifexis can result in serious side effects. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, decreased activity, itching, decreased appetite, and diarrhea. To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, redose with another full dose. Trifexis should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

If a dose is missed and a monthly interval between doses is exceeded, immediately give TRIFEXIS with food and resume monthly dosing. Do not give more medication than prescribed or two doses at once. If multiple doses have been missed, consult your veterinarian prior to restarting the monthly dosing schedule. Trifexis is given orally, once a month. Administer Trifexis with food for maximum effectiveness.

Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled room temperature (68-77°F), excursions permitted between 59-86°F. Keep this and all other medications in a secure location out of the reach of children and animals. Tablets should remain sealed in their original packaging and should only be taken out of the blister pack at the time of dosing.

Exposure to extreme temperatures, light, or moisture can affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications. Always store this medication properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places), as outlined on the product label.

The most common adverse reactions reported for Trifexis are vomiting, decreased activity, itching, decreased appetite, and diarrhea.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences a shock-like reaction, severe or persistent vomiting, or if you notice your pet has a seizure, extreme weakness, or decreased coordination (e.g., stumbling, difficulty walking).

Do not administer this medication to animals with a known or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.

If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with spinosad alone, a component of TRIFEXIS.

While there are no other specific food or drug interactions reported for this product, potential interactions may still be possible. As with all medications, please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns prior to use. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when multiple medications and/or supplements are given together.

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
