Felanorm® Oral Solution

Hyperthyroidism is the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disease in cats. It is a serious condition and life-threatening if left untreated.¹ The good news is that treatment can be simple and effective. If adequately treated and regularly monitored, most cats with hyperthyroidism can enjoy a normal life. Prompt diagnosis is key, so read on to learn the signs of hyperthyroidism in cats and how your veterinarian can help.

Felanorm Oral Solution is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats.

Felanorm (methimazole) Oral Solution: Wear protective single use, impermeable (e.g., latex or nitrile) gloves when administering the solution. Wash hands with soap and water after administration. The most commonly reported side effects in cats are anorexia, vomiting, head/facial pruritus or edema, depression/lethargy, weight loss, anemia, elevated liver enzymes, skin lesions, elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN), diarrhea, and thrombocytopenia. In some reported cases, the patients recovered after adverse reactions were recognized, the drug was withdrawn, and veterinary care was applied. Methimazole has anti-vitamin K activity and may induce bleeding diathesis without evidence of thrombocytopenia. Not for use in pregnant or lactating queens. Felanorm (methimazole) Oral Solution is available at 5 mg/mL in bottles containing 30 or 100 mL with a 1 mL dosing syringe that is calibrated in mg increments.

Please ensure the selected product and quantity are appropriate for your pet, as recommended by your veterinarian. For current availability, please refer to the product selection above.

Felanorm Oral Solution should be administered orally as directed by your veterinarian. Always wear protective, single-use, impermeable (e.g., latex or nitrile) gloves when preparing and administering doses. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water afterward, even if gloves are worn. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give more medication than prescribed or two doses at once. If you have questions about your pet’s prescribed dosing schedule (e.g., timing, interval), please contact your veterinarian.

Always follow the instructions and dosing guidance provided by your veterinarian. The product should be administered orally using the enclosed graduated dosing syringe as directed by your veterinarian. The syringe has measurements representing the mg dose of the product. Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled room temperature (77°F) with temperature disruptions between 59°-86°F permitted. Keep this and all other medications in a secure location out of the reach of children and animals. Keep the container tightly closed. The dosing syringe should be stored with the product bottle in the original carton.

Exposure to extreme temperatures, light, or moisture can affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications. Always store this medication properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places), as outlined on the product label.

Possible side effects include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea/loose stool, head and facial itchiness or swelling, skin lesions, weight loss, elevated liver enzymes, elevated kidney enzymes, abnormal vocalization, and low counts of red cells, white cells, and platelets. Methimazole may also cause your cat to bleed or bruise more easily.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences complete loss of appetite, unusual bruising or signs of bleeding, extreme lethargy or weakness, facial itching/sores, or if you notice yellowing of the skin, gums, or whites of the eyes (jaundice).

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all other medications out of reach of children and animals. In the event of accidental ingestion/overdose, seek medical advice immediately and show the product label to the physician.

Avoid skin and oral exposure, including hand-to-mouth contact. Wash any spillages or splatter from the skin immediately. Do not eat, drink, smoke/vape, or use smokeless tobacco while handling the product or used litter.

Felanorm may cause skin or eye irritation. Avoid eye contact, including hand-to-eye contact. In case of accidental eye contact, rinse eyes immediately with clean running water. If irritation develops, seek medical advice.

Do NOT use in cats with primary liver disease, kidney failure, autoimmune disease, or any bleeding or clotting disorder (such as anemia, neutropenia, lymphopenia, or thrombocytopenia).

Do NOT use in pregnant or lactating queens.

Use with caution in cats with kidney dysfunction.

The safety of Felanorm has not been evaluated in male cats intended for breeding. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian prior to use if your pet falls into this category.

Do not administer this medication to animals with a known or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to methimazole, carbimazole, or to any other ingredient in the formulation. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.

If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

This medication is classified as hazardous due to potential risks to pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers. Individuals with an endocrine disorder that could be impacted by methimazole should also take appropriate precautions.

All pet owners should wear protective, single-use, impermeable (e.g., latex or nitrile) gloves when administering the solution. Gloves should also be worn to prevent direct contact with the solution and the litter or bodily fluids of treated cats. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after administration or after contact with the litter or bodily fluids of treated cats, even if gloves are worn.

The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), benzimidazole anthelmintics (e.g., fenbendazole), beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, sotalol), digoxin, phenobarbital, prednisolone, and theophylline.

*NOTE: This may not be a comprehensive list. As with all medications, please consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns prior to use. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when multiple medications and/or supplements are given together.

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
