AYRADIA™ Oral Suspension

AYRADIA oral suspension is indicated for the treatment of Giardia duodenalis infection in dogs.

AYRADIA (metronidazole oral suspension): Not for use in humans. Avoid contact with skin and wash hands after use. In dogs, neurologic effects have been associated with AYRADIA oral suspension use at high doses. Use with caution in dogs with hepatic dysfunction. AYRADIA oral suspension is liver flavored.*

AYRADIA contains 125 mg of metronidazole per mL of oral solution and is supplied in 30 mL or 100 mL bottles. Each bottle comes pre-assembled with a dispensing system and an included 3 mL oral dosing syringe.

Please ensure the selected product and quantity are appropriate for your pet, as recommended by your veterinarian. For current availability, please refer to the product selection above.

AYRADIA oral suspension should be administered as directed by your veterinarian. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after administration. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule.

Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if your pet's condition improves. Incomplete treatment may result in recurrence or worsening of the infection. Contact your veterinarian ahead of time if your pet needs a refill.

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give more medication than prescribed or two doses at once. If you have questions about your pet’s prescribed dosing schedule (e.g., timing, interval), please contact your veterinarian.

Shake vigorously before use.

AYRADIA oral suspension is administered orally at a dose of 25 mg/kg (11.3 mg/lb) of body weight, using the supplied syringe, twice daily for five consecutive days. Each line on the included dosing syringe represents 0.1 mL of oral suspension. For dogs weighing more than 15 kg (33 lb), the total dose volume will be divided over multiple syringe draws because the dosing syringe only holds up to 3 mL. Alternatively, a standard luer lock syringe that holds more than 3 mL can also be used. The flavored suspension can be administered directly into the mouth or in a small amount of food.

Store in a cool, dry place at a controlled temperature below 86°F in the upright position. Keep this and all other medications in a secure location out of the reach of children and animals. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Once opened, use within 6 months.

Exposure to extreme temperatures, light, or moisture can affect the integrity and effectiveness of medications. Always store this medication properly (e.g., away from the bathroom, kitchen sink, or other damp places), as outlined on the product label.

The most common side effects of this medication are diarrhea and vomiting.

Other reported side effects include hyperactivity, excessive salivation, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, excessive urination, decreased/lack of appetite, ear infection, and lethargy.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences any signs of neurologic toxicity (e.g., decreased coordination, seizure), complete loss of appetite, or yellowing of the skin, gums, and/or whites of the eyes (jaundice).

People with known sensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives should avoid contact with AYRADIA oral suspension. This product is not a dermal or eye irritant but is a skin sensitizer which can potentially cause allergic contact dermatitis. Wash hands after use. Avoid contact with skin. In case of skin contact, wash the affected area thoroughly. Persons who come in contact with the dog’s saliva during the first five minutes after administration should wash their hands. If the drug has been applied to dog food, the dog food should be kept away from children until after the dog has finished eating. Avoid accidental ingestion. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately.

Use with caution in dogs with hepatic dysfunction.

The safe use of this drug in dogs intended for breeding purposes and in pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian prior to use if your pet falls into one of these categories.

Do not administer this medication to animals with a known or suspected allergy/hypersensitivity to any nitroimidazole drug, including metronidazole, or to any other ingredient in the formulation. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Please inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known sensitivities or allergies, especially to medications and supplements.

If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

This medication should NOT be used concurrently with products that contain ethanol (alcohol) or propylene glycol, as a reaction may occur with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, cramps, and dizziness.

While there are no specific food or drug interactions reported for this product, potential interactions may still be possible. The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: cyclosporine, mycophenolate, phenobarbital, sotalol, and warfarin.

Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter (OTC) products that your pet is currently using. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
